Cakes and pastries are to be enjoyed at any hour, whether outside the limits of a meal or as a graceful ending to a menu. At parties and celebrations, they are anticipated delights. At other times, they themselves create the occasion. Served with coffee or tea, a slice of gingerbread or pound cake or a tempting array of rich, cream and fruit-filled cakes and pastries breaks the day deliciously, and there are few better conclusions to dinner than a freshly baked apple pie made from fruit spiced with cinnamon and nutmeg and pastry enriched with eggs and butter.
